The lack of investment in the squad and lack of depth in certain positions, coupled with injuries to key players, has been the main contributing factor to Liverpool’s disappointing season. Additionally, Jurgen Klopp’s team has been over-reliant on star players like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, as well as lacking the ability to adequately cope with the absences of those players. Liverpool has also failed to replace outgoing players such as Philippe Coutinho with adequate squad replacements. Furthermore, the club’s inability to respond to tactical changes by their opponents has been a major issue. Finally, the club’s defensive fragility has been exposed multiple times this season, largely due to the lack of an established center back pairing.

CHRIS SUTTON: Sorry, Jurgen, here’s why Liverpool’s season has been a mess

It has been a tumultuous season for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, and their stumble to the finish line has been a bitter disappointment. The Reds have seen their title dreams vanish, their European ambitions shattered, and their hopes of making the top four dashed.

The reasons behind the Reds’ struggles this season are varied, but the primary cause of their struggles can be attributed to a lack of depth and injuries.

The 2019-2020 campaign saw the Reds win their first ever Premier League title, with their formidable front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane scoring a combined 99 goals. This season, however, injuries have decimated the trio, with Firmino and Mane both missing significant time. Salah has been the only one of the three to stay healthy, but his form has been inconsistent.

The lack of depth in the squad has been further exposed due to the injury crisis. The midfield has lacked creativity, with the likes of Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita both missing time due to injury. The defence has been poor, with the Reds conceding 47 goals in the Premier League – their highest total since the 1963-64 season.

Klopp has also been slow to react to the changing circumstances. While other teams have welcomed the return of fans, Klopp has been reluctant to make changes to his line-up. He has also been slow to make tactical adjustments, often sticking with the same players and formations despite the Reds’ struggles.

Ultimately, the combination of injuries, lack of depth and Klopp’s reluctance to make changes has seen Liverpool’s season go from bad to worse. They may have had their chances to make the top four, but the Reds’ season has been a mess and it’s one that Klopp must take responsibility for.
