VANCOUVER, B.C. — British Columbia’s Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Selina Robinson, has announced she has been diagnosed with a second cancer.

Robinson made the announcement Tuesday morning, saying she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in her lower back. She says it is unrelated to the thyroid cancer she was diagnosed with in 2012.

“I’m facing this news as I have faced previous health challenges – with courage and optimism,” said Robinson.

Robinson says she is now undergoing treatment which includes surgery and radiation, and she plans to be back to work soon.

“I am deeply grateful for the amazing care I have and continue to receive from the incredible health care professionals in British Columbia,” Robinson said. “I am surrounded by love and support from my family, friends, colleagues and constituents, and I would not be able to face this without them.”

Robinson took a brief leave of absence in October to have surgery for a medical condition, but did not disclose the details at the time.

Premier John Horgan says he and the entire British Columbia government are standing behind Robinson and her family during this difficult time.

“Selina is an incredible person who puts her all into her work, and I know she will take that same approach to her treatment,” said Horgan. “I know British Columbians will join me in sending her our very best wishes for a speedy recovery.”
