Scots mum in ‘hellish cycle’ as skin constantly blisters leaving her in agony

A Scots mum has described a harrowing “hellish cycle” of skin that constantly blisters – leaving her in excruciating pain.

Karen Mckay, 39, from Ayrshire suffered for four years before finally being diagnosed with a rare skin condition called epidermolysis bullosa (EB).

The condition causes her skin to blister at the slightest touch, leaving her in agony and constantly in need of medical attention.

Ms Mckay described her condition as living in a “hellish cycle”, with her skin constantly blistering and healing. She said that the pain is so severe that she often can’t get out of bed.

“The pain is unbearable, I’m just in a constant cycle of healing and blistering,” she said.

“My skin blisters at the lightest touch. Even sleeping can be a source of pain if I move too quickly.

Ms Mckay said that she has sought help from her doctor and taken medication, but it hasn’t been enough to help her get her life back.

“I’ve been to my doctor and tried different medications and treatments, but nothing has worked,” she said.

“I’m desperate for a way to manage my pain so that I’m able to do the things that I love and live my life.”

Ms Mckay is now calling for more research into EB and better support for those affected by the condition.

“I want to see more awareness and research into EB, to make sure that no one else has to suffer the way that I am,” she said.

“I’m also hoping that more support can be given to those who suffer from EB, so that they can lead a normal life.”
