This week in Jacksonville University athletics saw the JU Dolphins compete hard in a variety of sports. On the basketball court, the men’s team traveled to Lakeland to take on the Florida Southern Mocs in a key ASUN matchup. The Dolphins fought hard but eventually fell in a close contest, 73-70. The women’s team was at home, hosting the Mercer Bears. It was a back-and-forth affair throughout, but JU ultimately squeaked out a 75-73 win.
The baseball team kicked off its 2021 season in style, taking two out of three from the North Florida Ospreys. The Dolphins got an impressive start to the season from ace pitcher Garrett Cave, who threw a complete game shutout in the opening game. The team also got contributions from hitters Nick Price, who had three hits and two RBIs, and Brandon Hernandez, who hit a home run in the third game.
In other sports, the women’s tennis team had a strong week, picking up victories over Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast. The Dolphins were led by a pair of freshman standouts, Lexi Clark and Isabella Fernandez, who each won two matches. The men’s tennis squad also had a good week, picking up wins over UNF and Stetson.
Heading into next week, the men’s basketball team will be on the road again, this time traveling to DeLand to take on the Stetson Hatters. The women’s basketball team will also be on the road, making the trip down I-95 to take on the Florida Atlantic Owls. The baseball team will take on the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in a midweek matchup, before heading to Tampa for a weekend series against the South Florida Bulls.
It was a busy and successful week for the Jacksonville University Dolphins and their fans, and with more tough matchups on the horizon, the excitement will no doubt continue. Be sure to follow the Dolphins as they look to continue their strong start to the 2021 season!
